After a couple of days in Rio

A number of days have passed and the weather hasn't been all the good to us. It has been overcast and raining, so my hopes of obtaining a South American tan have all but been dashed. We did manage a walking tour of downtown, and took a street car up to Santa Teresa. On the Sunday night we went out looking for a bar to drink in. We had been advised by the young guy running our Hostel, he didn't speak/understand English or Spanish and we didn't understand Portuguese, that we should go over to the Lapa district. Don't ask me how we worked it out with the communication barrier, but somehow we did. It was getting late by the time we got going, so a decision to jump in a cab instead of catching the bus was made. My word, that taxi meter sky rocketed so quickly, and it felt as though we were just going around in circles. The club that we were advised to go to was closed when we got there. There was another bar just down the road with great music being pumped out, but at the door the bouncer took one look at us and refused to let us in. The streets were quiet and we headed off in hope to find something. Just as we thought the night had come to a premature end, down a side street there was a pub on the corner with a crowd of young people spilling out onto the streets. YEAH! By this now I had learnt the Portuguese word for beer and was looking forward to exercising exercising my new language skills.

We bought our first round from inside the pub, but afterwards while standing outside drinking a drinks and mingling we noticed that people had set up there own bars and were selling the drinks cheaper. As the night went on the rain came down and we moved from the street to underneath a railroad bridge from across the street of the pub. All we needed was a drum with a fire in it and a few people walking around with their lively possessions in plastic bags and it would have been a scene from a movie. Again too much was drunk by some, not me this time, and a sore and cranky person awoke the next morning, again not me.
